We would be very unhappy if so similar degradation occurred in our instrument. We understand your determination to set it in a position to play. The lack of motivation of the persons in charge is incomprehensible because it is not a question of a usual wear, but of an external element for which they can be responsible. And it is not good for the health of the people to breathe a so polluted air. The pollution, which settles on the filters, can also settle in the lungs.

Is there any new since the expertise?
We wish you to reach a solution quickly.
Best regards.

What’s a calamity… Such an organ merits much better than the abandonment. There is no word to define such a loss of interest of the city. This instrument belongs to our artistic and cultural inheritance, it should be preserved. It is useless to make good figure when it looks well if it is to drop such a masterpiece in ruin.

I heartily wish the persons in charge for the city become aware of their responsibility of curators of the artistic inheritance the instrument of St-Louis represents.

I know the value and the interest of this organ, having played myself on several occasions, and can only be dismayed by the actual wasting which the opposition to progress constitutes which have prevailed for such a long time about the actions to be undertaken.

There are inevitably technical solutions making it possible to arrange the needs for each one, church, heating, safeguarding of the instrument after restoration.

I had the occasion to come twice to Vichy, twice for the organ, twice with much emotion and twice without regrets.

In my opinion, it is a pity to see an inheritance such as the organ of the church St Louis of Vichy deteriorating in the way so many people, experts and analysts show without ambiguities. On 2003, I had the opportunity to note by myself this progressive degradation with which it was necessary to compose... On 2002, the organ was well better.

The town of Vichy is not famous not only for its pastilles, its water, its thermal baths, its Napoleonean architectural heritage, but also for its Aubertin organ. Here is an asset more for this so pleasant and beautiful city.

This organ, so easily accessible, was never the fief of a person in particular and the reception at this organ loft is well-known. So many prestigious organists made themselves self known there. So many discs were recorded with this organ which proved reliable. All the concerts, the discographic achievements and the gold book of the organ are there to testify that.

Well, the organ is in bad condition. Like a car, it needs maintenance and changes of worn parts. External conditions come to accelerate this deterioration. It would be a shame to let such an inheritance perish, and thus see such an amount of money and human investments wasted. Is a car thrown with the least problem?

I don't believe it's only a financial problem, knowing that this so beautiful city gives itself the means to offer such a beautiful environment to its inhabitants and to the tourists who give back much to the city. Beyond the divergences of opinions, of political or religious ideas, would not be it possible to reach a higher level and to see the interest which this organ has, so much for its intrinsic, musical (near the opera of Vichy) and tourist qualities by forgetting few human quarrels? It is probably possible to find some solutions enabling to improve the heating in order to give conditions of longevity to the instrument. Can't there be money, consideration and priority for everyone, independently of personal opinions?

There are so few organs in the Allier District, and with Souvigny, this organ is in my opinion the jewel of the French organistic inheritance. Is it necessary to let it perish and thus to see one of the so rare organ of this beautiful district rotting in place?

With all my encouragements and the wish of having the possibility to play again this instrument under better conditions!

It is with much sadness that I see degrading inexorably such an important instrument , alluring and original Aubertin of St-Louis. I had the chance during last years to reach this organ loft and to appreciate the qualities of this exceptional realization. It seems rather unexplainable to me that one lets go such a situation, after having authorized an important amount drawn from the public funds to equip the town of Vichy with one of the jewels of the contemporary organ building.

So I want to join my voice to all of those who rise to claim a rectification of this situation so that the instrument finds its splendour and its liturgical and cultural role.

Yves-G. Préfontaine

p.s. In this last place, one of the principal sources of incomes is the candles, large and small, as it seems a little the case at St-Louis. We have a very beautiful mechanical Casavant 40 years old organ of 30 stops. During these years, the instrument had only one removing the dust, and still more for the principle than for a real need. All the candles are concentrated apart, in a single nicely arranged place above which a hood pulsates the air outside through the ceiling. Not a micron of soot in the church... And not expensive.

Bernard [Aubertin] is now a wizard, but I always thought that!

Sorry to read about the problems in the church. How distressing, especially after the wonderful times when the organ was put in. I always remember coming with Bernard and Sonja to see the first recording of Ulrik and Karin and the mayor of the city had put road blocks to stop the traffic! How times have changed.

What is the use of having spent a fortune to build such an instrument and to abandon it so quickly!

It would be necessary indeed to start giving up the warm-air heating. Since the Catholics have the taste of comfort more than martyrdom, it is better knowing that there are heating systems per groundsheet relatively inexpensive and less expensive than the current system, which is in every respect a perfect aberration.

Repairing the organ without rectifying the environment would come .... to piss in a violin...

Mister the Mayor.

At last season, in 2006, we deplored the cancellation in the concerts of organ in St-Louis. These concerts take part in the artistic influence of Vichy. They attract at the same time residents of Vichy, curists, tourists and inhabitants of the area. I lived at Ebreuil for a long time and we were several to watch for these concerts and to listen to them. We appreciate them very much and we only wish that this splendid instrument will be repaired and that the concerts will begin again.

Let me ask you to examine the possibility of a repairing in a relatively near future and in advance I express you all my gratitude.

Dear Monsieur le Maire,

The organ of Saint-Louis de Vichy needs your intervention

I have twice had the pleasure of visiting your town, both times because of the organ of Saint-Louis, which is one of the few most masterly new organs built in Europe—nay, in the world—these last twenty years.

The town council paid for it, and what it has paid for I would expect it to look after with some care, and certainly without forgetting its responsibilities as soon as this. I beg the Council to remember its past investments—its investments in true native craftsmanship, in music (regardless of whether that music matches your own personal tastes or those of your fellow council administrators), and in the cultural honour of its own city—and to set about the rescue of an artistic monument whose beauties and qualities deserve not to be overlooked.

All knowledge is precious whether or not it serves the slightest human use, wrote the English poet A. E. Housman. I would like to adapt that aphorism freely enough to be able to say this to you: that all arts redound to the glory of humanity whether or not you yourself appreciate them, and that their neglect puts shame on those local authorities guilty of that neglect.

Please waken your sense of cultural responsibility and act to show that you are worthy of your status as leaders of a great city—a city which is greater when the Saint-Louis organ is in good voice than when it is crippled as a result of the Council’s parsimony and the dereliction of its duty. Please do not fail the good things in your city, but guard them, as it trusts you to do.

Yours very truly,

Odile and Jean-Marc Talpin

March 2007.

If one “manufactures” a musical instrument, like a violin, one “builds” an organ, like a monument. This masterpiece of the Builder Bernard Aubertin was manufactured with the old, traditional materials and techniques coming from the trade-guild, having to ensure the perenniality of these instruments, confirmed in the past. The trade of organ builder requires competences in all the fields of the craft industry, and moreover, it must be an artist. Not preserving with all the means its work is a lack of respect. What will think the future generations? Especially if the current damage becomes irreversible…

Let us hope that the various authorities find solutions so that everyone finds satisfaction. Thank you in advance, in the name of this builder of talent and of this instrument which serves one of the noblest forms of the human thought.

to the attention of Francoise Pouradier Duteil,

Thank you, Madam, for the excellent reception which you reserved to the many people who came to see, to hear and to play on what were the beautiful Aubertin organ of St Louis.

If this instrument were a chief of work, the state of decay of the wedge-shaped blower, patched up with adhesive to limit the loss of wind and to allow him to produce, in spite of the leaks, some sounds from fund pipes as well as from the reeds, is not acceptable. Piping, is suffering too because of black, fatty, acid dust sent by the pulsated hot air which pollutes bevels and modifies the attack and the tone of the pipes.

I hope sincerely that the municipality of Vichy become aware that it is urgently necessary to make carry out work of restoration in order to cure this premature ageing and that this organ, still new since inaugurated in 1991, recovers its notoriety it had when just built.

I also think that it would be necessary to consider another heating system for the church in order not to find itself in front of the same problem in a few years.

Best regards.

I very recently learned the worrying news about the state of the great organ of Saint-Louis of Vichy.

This recent instrument is exceptional in more than one way (quality of its conception and its construction, beauty and variety of its tone, broad artistic possibilities, aesthetic and visual beauty, enrichment of the inheritance organistic of the area.): such a jewel must be absolutely preserved from physical dangers which threaten otherwise it deteriorates very quickly in an irremediable way.

The history of the organs teaches us that many extraordinary instruments were lost in a final way, very often because of the negligence and the unconsciousness of the men.

It is advisable to learn from this history the lessons which are essential and to do everything so that a so beautiful organ does not know a similar fate. An intervention is now urgent and essential, and I hope that it will be carried out and financed as soon as possible for the good of all.

PS (March 10):
I hope that this very modest contribution will have an even tiny importance! I am very attached to the organ of Vichy since I am a young organist (my parents having a residence near Vichy) and I still have the memory of memorable and stimulating concert Olivier Latry gave about fifteen years ago. I am fully at your disposal if you need anything else!

A city as Vichy which has a superb market hall and very pleasant reception facilities, in the point of modernity, must, it seems to me, hear the desperate cries of all in love ones with the music and the organ of the St-Louis church.

The budget required for essential work appears modest to me but I place at your disposal through the association the moderate amount of 30 Euros to help you to contribute to this urgency.

It would seem that the owner is not really aware of the care which such an instrument deserves which contributed much, and I hope will contribute still a long time, to the cultural reputation of the town of Vichy. Ah, if it were about a road, a round not, or a park, the fund would have been found very quickly. Then I do not doubt that it is a negligence, as it is found in a little important communes where the elected officials are often a little distant from the inheritance.

I hope of any heart that what is only one essential maintenance (even not a restoration) will quickly be set up and which the organ will find the plenitude of its beautiful and great voice.

In Domgermain (54), we have however a warm-air heating for more than 30 years and we never had such vexations! fortunately, because the church shelters a very beautiful organ of 1720, restored magnificiently in 1994 by Didier CHANON, and which functions perfectly (cf our CD with JC ABLITZER published in 2004, and devoted to JF DANDRIEU).

To return from there to your problem, how is it possible that a warm-air heating makes damage so much? did you ask for an expertise? problem of filters? It is not normal. It is necessary to see an expert.

Well cordially.

Pierre-Henri Jondot,
organist and harpsichordist of Bordeaux

Mister the Mayor

I recently learned the serious state in which is the Aubertin organ of the Saint-Louis church of Vichy, the skins of the bellows of the instrument having been degraded prematurely by the combined actions of a warm-air heating and candles of the faithful ones. Obviously, the vaults of the church bear the marks…

I am thus quite sad to learn that at the end of 16 years, the Aubertin organ of Vichy is now at the edge of asphyxiation, that the concerts of summer, cancelled in 2006, and in which I had taken part the 18/7/2004 with pleasure, in front of a numerous public, accustomed to these Sunday afternoon rendez-vous, are likely well not to take place more in 2007 if repair work (change of the skins of the bellows, obligatory installation of a solution of filtering to perennialize those) is not carried out quickly.

The roof also seems to be involved, and infiltrations regularly degrade famous Napoleon 32', of which the feet hardly appreciate the contact of moisture. The building either, that is hardly doubt.

You are certainly not unaware of the important role of an instrument like the Aubertin organ of the Saint-Louis church of Vichy in the French and international radiation of the town of Vichy. Its discography, its many visits by musicians of all countries, the concerts organized on this one, which obviously extremely appreciate the tourists during the summer, without of course forgetting its use for the cult, make Aubertin organ an essential element of the cultural inheritance of the town of Vichy. It is not forgotten in an Internet site of this one.

Thank you to make so that it can hold this role again very soon.

Sincerely yours

… Cheer for your site, and happy to make knowledge with “the big brother” of the organ of Virtues.

Afflicted to learn that this chief of work can be so damaged in this way.

Us also in Vertus, with snow once then with the storm of 1999, the organ suffered two damages of water fortunately taken into account by the insurance of the Commune. (to see whether there is no possibility with the Town hall on this side.....) We finally solved this problem by making a second roof inside the attic of the church, with gutters above the organ and completely hidden (the church is classified). I will see immediately the interior of the pipe rackings to see whether this risk can be actual in Vertus (normally not, because there are no points of devotion with candles in the church). It is also necessary to fit a filter (dust and activated carbon) in front of the aspiration of the ventilator, and regularly to replace the cartridges within the context of annual maintenance. Lastly, and I already said it to Bernard Aubertin, it is not normal that this kind of risks was not intrinsically integrated during the construction, even if it means to increase the initial budget still a little more. It is true for the damage of water, it is now true for the inspired air. Well, I remain ready to contact with St Louis en île and Tours so that the concerned Associations can communicate on these problems.

Well musically Yours

If I understood well, the concerts are excluded from now but does the organ remain operational for the Liturgy? And what about of the agreement/collaboration between Parish/Town hall????

It is well-known: there is no more (public) money for the Organ in general! Eric BROTTIER shouts it on the roofs - about our CC/MMK Organ of the cathedral of Belley and about Lété Organ of NANTUA… where I pump the canticles! NANTUA, it was for 2007: it will (would) be for 2008…

I well felt your message of distress for your organ of Vichy. I wish that the Town hall will be sensitive, like some, with the health of your instrument.

This known as, I do not see how the bellows can be at this point bored and ruined with the only reason of the heating and the emanation of the candles.

Many churches are in a near similar situation (and others with a permanent water content of 95/98%) without making suffer such damage - so quickly - on a new instrument.

Not having personally the possibility in the immediate future of observing the phenomenon on the spot, I regret not being able to contribute to the cause which you defend.

It was an important event the media largely made known. Then many concerts and recordings proceeded here, valorizing the instrument and the church while contributing to enrich the cultural life of Vichy and its area. All was for the best! I was far from imagining the problems with which the various intervenors were confronted, associations, organists, etc… in front of the bad state of an instrument whose good reputation seemed definitively acquired. It is true that such repairing represents an important cost, but as it will be necessary at one time or another, it would be judicious that Doctor Malhuret's team deals with this work as fast as possible so that Vichy continues to have in a state to play such an instrument, which is a privilege for a church and also for a town of this reputation.

Mr. Mayor of Vichy
Town hall
03100 - Vichy

Souvigny, on January 20, 2006.

Mister the Mayor,

I allow myself to draw your attention to the current state of the Aubertin organ of the Saint-Louis church of Vichy. Having followed the design and the realization of this beautiful instrument since the origin, faithful listener of auditions and concerts of organ organized by the association Rebirth of the Organ of St Louis, and finally loving the inheritance of our department, I am affected to learn that the Aubertin organ is unplayable today in concert. As you know, some fatty soots due to the heating system and the smoke of the candles pierced various skins, indeed, in particular those of the bellows, which involves whistles and dysfunctions. Recurrent floods on the vault damage the pipe bases.

It seems urgent to take measures and to carry out repair work. The important investment that the construction of the organ represented in 1991 was greeted by all of those - musicians, music lovers, tourists, visitors - who knew moments of happiness and of elevation thanks to the beauty of the instrument. It would be extremely regrettable that the Town of Vichy does not make the necessary effort for repairing what is today one of the florets of its cultural inheritance, this organ of which notoriety largely exceeds the borders of our area. An organ, indeed, is more than one simple functional tool: it is at the same time the product of the craft industry and a work of art entirely, which for this reason plays a major part in the cultural life of a city.

What can appear as a short-term economy is likely to prove to be a bad long-term calculation - the restoration of an instrument let broken down being obviously much more expensive than a progressive repairing.

The organists and the Association Rebirth of the Organ of St Louis did not fail to alert you on this problem. As an organist and a music lover, but also as a member (with responsibilities) of several associations which work with the defense of the historical organ in France like abroad, I join my voice to their in order to request you to register with determination the restoration of the organ of Saint-Louis of Vichy among the budgetary priorities of the Town of Vichy.

Thanking you for your attention I remain sincerely yours

I receive this message with sadness and concern.

Indeed, the organ built by Aubertin has a really exceptional quality, and the greatest reputation: such instruments establish the most beautiful future of our inheritance. The danger which threatens in the short run the organ of Vichy is consequently an alarming occurrence.

Concerning your heating, it seems to me that in these days when the threat of various pollution becomes increasingly pressing, and when all the public becomes aware of it, a fundamental improvement of the heating system of the Saint-Louis church would be a better policy of your town hall. Moreover, isn't it foreseeable that the important economies of fuel with a recent boiler would cover rather quickly the replacement costs of the old one?

For the candles, of course it is legitimate that the faithful deposit some, but it appears obvious that their site can be judiciously chosen, and provided with a recovery of fume, as in almost all the religious buildings - and they are numerous - where there is an important inheritance: and such is Vichy, indeed, at least thanks to the organ of Aubertin. The income the candles can bring, can be compared with the cost of an organ of 47 plays of beautiful quality, and with the cost of the now necessary renovation work, whose expensive list will increase, if decision is not taken quickly?

The raised problems seem rather easy to solve, without however offending anybody: but it is important to act quickly, so that everyone becomes aware of the immense value of an instrument which is the property of all, and the responsibility for all.

But as the delicate questions of conservation of the musical instruments are often very technical subjects, I believe good indeed to request reaction of specialist of the music and organ, in order to make sensitive with the best way those locally in charge of Vichy, to take the measures to preserve their priceless inheritance.

With my sincerity.

I ardently join the petitioners list so that decent credits are open for the restoration of the splendid Aubertin organ of St-Louis in Vichy.

Subject: Warm-air heating

…. Considering the disadvantages of the warm-air heating, I do not understand that some are bought… They are expensive, ineffective, dirtying and dangerous (in the case of carbon monoxide). The organ of Moyeuvre-Large is in its current (bad) state because of this system of hot air and dryness which desiccated the skins, the membranes and took off certain pipes…

…. I knew that the situation was problematic but I did not know that it was at this point! …

… after having made build a masterpiece by the most famous organ builder of France, and one of best in Europe at our time, how an owner can leave it in such a state of abandonment, with the risk to see wasting the totality of a heavy investment, which contributed, still a little time ago, to the reputation of the Town of Vichy? Would the ruin be a choice of judicious management?

Such a lack of continuation in the ideas of the political authorities of this city can only be regrettable.
